Zimbabwe Visa Requirements

If you are staying for less than six months, you can enter Zimbabwe with a minimum of formalities. A Visa to enter Zimbabwe is required by several nationalities, please read the full details listed below.

There are 3 visa categories:

Category A: Countries whose nationals do NOT require a Visa. No action required, you will be granted easy entry at any border post.

Category B: Countries whose nationals are granted a Zimbabwe visa at port of entry on payment of requisite visa fees. These visas are easiest obtained on your arrival at the Airport or border post. If you get them done via an agency in your home country they will often cost you quite a bit more and be a lot more hassle.

Category C: Countries whose nationals are required to apply for and obtain a Zimbabwe visa prior to travelling. Unfortunately this is a bit of a pain, but you have to apply through an agency or the Zimbabwe High Commission in your home country.

Find out the Category of your country in the tables below.

All Categories need:-

  • Passport valid for a least 6 months from your date of entry.• Return ticket to your country (or enough money to buy one)• Sufficient funds to cover your stay in Zimbabwe.• Enough blank pages in your passport to fit the required entry visa.

  • If you have purchased a single entry visa upon arrival and then decide to leave Zimbabwe, even for a few hours, you will need to buy another visa to re-enter Zimbabwe. In this instance you should buy a double entry visa upon arrival, it works out cheaper.NB - Multiple Entry Visas - cannot be obtained at the port of entry into Zimbabwe.  You may enter Zimbabwe on a single entry visa and then obtain a Multiple Entry Visa from the town office - but this may take up to 7 working days to be issued. Alternatively a multiple entry visa can be obtained from the Zimbabwe Embassy in your country prior to departure for Zimbabwe.

  • Children - As of June 2012 - Zimbabwe will now be charging FULL VISA fees for any individual who is required to have a VISA despite their age. This includes infants and children who were previously being exempted from this. This has been imposed with immediate effect.

CATEGORY C: ZIMBABWE VISA FEES

Single Entry

US$65 to US$100

Category C nationals can only get a single entry Zimbabwe visa

British Passports Holders

You need a Zimbabwe visa to visit Zimbabwe. This can be obtained from the Zimbabwe Embassy in London or on arrival in Zimbabwe.  In most cases it is easier and in most cases cheaper just to get one at the port of entry.

The current charge for a single entry Zimbabwe visa issued on arrival is US$ 55 and US$ 70 for a Double Entry Zimbabwe visa, although this could change at any stage. If you have not obtained a Zimbabwe visa before travelling, you should bring enough cash with you to pay for your visa on arrival - (no credit/debit cards or cheques). Visitors are currently being given entry permission for anything up to 90 days but you are strongly advised to check that the number of days given at the port of entry covers your intended period of stay, although you can apply to have this period renewed and extended if required.

USA Passport Holders

You need a Zimbabwe visa to visit Zimbabwe, this can be obtained from the Zimbabwe Embassy in the United States or on arrival in Zimbabwe.  To be honest it is easier and in most cases cheaper just to get one at the port of entry. The current charge for a single entry Zimbabwe visa issued on arrival is US$ 30 and US$ 45 for a Double Entry Zimbabwe visa, although this could change at any stage. If you have not obtained a Zimbabwe visa before travelling, you should bring enough cash with you to pay for your visa on arrival - (no credit/debit cards or cheques).

Visa Requirements & Currency

Zambia - Zimbabwe

Money:

Credit cards can be used in Victoria Falls, most lodges and hotels will accept Visa & MasterCard. ATM’s are also available at a number of locations.

Currency:

The official Zimbabwean currency is $US.

Banks:

In Zimbabwe, you will need foreign currency. On the Zambian side, you can buy kwacha (Zambian currency) at hotels, or use the ATM at The Falls casino and entertainment center, near the border. Most prices are quoted in U.S. dollars, but getting change on large notes is hard, so it's useful to have some local currency or to carry small dollar denominations which will be useful for drinks, tips and curios, the South Africa Rand can also be used but not always at a great exchange rate. NB Always check before you spend. DO NOT be tempted to change money with people on the street however charming or persistent. It’s against the law. Rather go to a reputable bureau de change.

If you plan on buying some of the stunning curios on offer in Victoria Falls you may want take along a ‘sweetener’ to clinch your deal in the form of old clothes (T-shirts are popular), sunglasses, batteries even pens.

Latest information about currency and exchange rates

Your Money in Victoria Falls

On both the Zimbabwean and the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls travellers can use US Dollars (USD) and South African Rand (ZAR). The official currency of Zambia is the Kwacha (ZMK).

The following information pertains to travel within Zimbabwe. In order to stabilize Zimbabwe's erratic currency in April of 2009 the Zimbabwean dollar was officially renounced. what this means is that all exchange in Zimbabwe now takes place in foreign currency. The primary currencies in use are the South African Rand and the US Dollar. Remember that entrance fees to the Victoria Falls National Park, River Usage Fee, Visa Costs are charged in US Dollars and therefore you need to ensure that you carry sufficient for your requirements.

Visit VicFalls.com Guide to Foreign Exchange in Victoria Falls

Before you travel to Zimbabwe, its absolutely vital that you have a clear understanding of how to exchange money. The following step by step guide is invaluable but information is constantly changing so please check the latest status with your VisitVicFalls consultant.

  • The Zimbabwean Dollar was also one of the lowest-valued currencies in the world. Due to massive inflation and three redenominations, it was suspended indefinitely on 12 April 2009. Today, other currencies are exclusively used for transactions in Zimbabwe instead with the most popular choice being the US Dollar followed by South African Rands.

  • Very few vendors in Zimbabwe have credit card facilities. Mastercard do not operate in Zimbabwe, and Visa look set to withdraw the facility at any moment.

  • Carry small denominations of international currency. This makes paying bills easy, and purchasing curios and gifts even easier.

  • Meals and Drinks bills need to settled on departure from the hotel in international currency.

  • Travellers Cheques can be used to pay for bills on the departure from hotels. Do not use Travellers Cheques for foreign exchange.
